University of Denver and Studying Abroad
Why does DU encourage students to study abroad? Where can you go?
31.05.2009
“A key goal within the University of Denver’s mission is to ‘develop global perspectives and connections by substantially expanding student and faculty experiences abroad’” (“About,” 2009). The University of Denver is a huge proponent of the study abroad program. As a university, we believe that “the growing important of cross-cultural understanding, along with new global events and interdependencies, challenge[s] us to internationalize our curriculum” (“About,” 2009). Thus, the University of Denver has established over 150 DU study abroad programs that allow students to go abroad for a quarter, semester, or entire academic year. Although at most institutions the cost of going abroad is not included in tuition, at the University of Denver they have established the Cherrington Global Scholars Program. This program gives eligible students the opportunity to work abroad at no additional cost beyond that of a term at DU (not including personal expenses), giving students even more incentive to go abroad.
This experience should not be passed up by anyone at the University of Denver. The experience alone of seeing places that a college student would otherwise be unable to visit is enough value to most, as is knowing that the cost is the same as going to school in Denver for another quarter. Why not step out of your comfort zone and live a little? But also the fact of enriching one’s education in a way that would otherwise be unattainable is where most students- and parents- find the value and impact of the study abroad experience. Students who go abroad have come back with usually nothing but positive feedback on their experience
Since the University of Denver offers over 150 DU related study abroad programs to its students, the options for where to actually study are not limited. From all over Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, and Australia each student is able to find somewhere desirable for them to spend a quarter.
